Niels Peter Juel Larsen was born on the 18th of May, 1942 in Frederikshavn, Denmark. He completed a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature in 1968. From 1968 until 1985 he worked at Danmarks Radio (the Danish National Broadcasting Corporation) as a writer, reporter and radio producer (documentaries). After winning the inaugural Kryger Prize in 1973 he was offered a staff position. During his time with Danmarks Radio, he won three international prizes:
1978 | Prix Italia for the radio feature Death in the Mountains – an account of Nicaragua at the beginning of the revolution.
1983 | Prix Futura for the radio feature Foreigner in Denmark – an exploration of foreign workers in Denmark.
1985 | Prix Futura for the radio feature Journey to the Ice Edge – A hunting expedition in Greenland.
He left Danish radio in 1985. Since then he has lived between Berlin and Denmark as a freelance writer, reporter and novelist. He has written a number of feature stories for Geo (equivalent of National Geographic), Die Zeit, and various Danish newspapers. During this time, he also wrote and produced radio features for Sender Freies Berlin and other radio stations such as France Culture. He has also travelled as a lecturer in radio feature making to China among other places.
Niels Peter Juel Larsen also served as a member of the Danish Arts Council from 2007-2011.
